Travel has been a part of my life from a very young age and although my trips weren't that exotic - mainly consisting sailing around the Irish sea, my childhood adventures gave me a thirst for exploration and now I've grown up, all I want to do is see the world. St Christopher is the patron saint of travel and those who are superstitious and like to carry good luck charms on their journeys often carry a St Christopher charm. My father who has a keen interest in sailing has carried a St Christopher charm with him since he was 17 years old and he is now in his 60s and I have friends who have been gifted a St Christopher charm when going on gap years. Although the legend is hundreds of years old, the story is well known amongst travellers of different ages and St Christopher jewellery is more popular than ever before.
According to the legend, Christopher was a tall and fearsome man that served under the King of Canaan and because of his tremendous size, Christopher was often tasked with helping people cross dangerous rivers. One day a child approached him and asked Christopher to accompany him across the river. During that particular crossing, the river waters kept rising and the child became too heavy to carry, Christopher found himself in great difficulty. Eventually, Christopher won the battle against the tide and carried the child to safety. Once he reached the shoreline, Christopher asked the child 'why he became so heavy' and the child replied:" You had on your shoulders not only the whole world, but he who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work". The child then vanished. St Christopher went onto to believe that day that he was visited by god and Christopher made it his life work to protect travellers and children, hence becoming St Christopher of travel and children.
To celebrate St Christopher, the patron saint of travel, I will be giving away a personalised St Christopher necklace from Scarlett Jewellery for one of my lucky readers to win. Whether you're embarking on a staycation or a long haul trip away, hopefully this necklace will give you a safe journey and lots of good luck. The competition is open to those 18 and over living in the UK and all you have to do is enter the Rafflecopter form below.
