Why I love Travelling Europe in the Autumn

Autumn is by far my favourite season. I love the crisp orange leaves falling off the trees, walks in the dark under the glow of street lights and cuddling up in front of a roaring fire in a village pub drinking mulled cider or wine. It is the perfect time to travel as it is cheap, the streets are romantically and you get to see the change of season in another country.  Here's just a few of the reasons I enjoy travelling in the autumn.

Fewer crowds

Most people use up their annual leave in the spring and summer, meaning that when you travel in the autumn there's generally fewer crowds. You can walk the streets knowing there's plenty of foot path ahead, go into museums without a stampede of tourists waiting impatiently behind you and also not have to book as far in advance to eat out at the best places in the city.

Great deals

Because less people travel in the autumn, it means that you are often able to find some great deals. Hotels will have beds still available, airlines will have seats to fill and all of them will happily fight over your custom to ensure money is still coming in.

Beautiful autumnal colours

Autumn is one of those most photogenic months with it's warm orange glow and the mix mustard yellow  and the dark green crushed leaves. In my opinion, it makes everywhere look that little bit more magical. The photograph above was taken on a morning walk through Vondel Park in Amsterdam, it is one of my favourite autumnal photographs.

Authentic Experience

As the tourist season comes to end an end, a lot of the commercial tourist traps end up closing and all that is left are the places where the locals eat, drink and shop. It immerses you in culture and you will learn a lot more about the place you are visiting.

It's not actually that cold

A lot of people put off travelling in autumn because they think it will be too cold, but that's not always the case.  Yes, you may need to pack an extra jumper, but the majority of the time the weather is bearable and in places like Barcelona the temperature still remains in its twenties until the beginning of winter.

Do you travel in the autumn?
